To my auld Ma

Edit- I posted this Friday 30th October, Irish time, and didn't notice that the time on my blog is different..what's that about? I've now changed time settings to GMT- something new learned today!

This morning, at 3.15 am or so, my Mum is 22 years dead.

These were two of her favourite little poems/sayings:

1. When e're I pass a church

I always pay a visit

So that on the day when I'm wheeled in

The Lord won't say "who is it?"

2. Think of the wants of others

Think of them before your own

See all the good in others

See that and that alone.

She wasn't perfect, but she was perfect enough.

Her funeral was on All Saints Day, and at the ceremony, the priest said some words that I will always remember. "Saints are ordinary people who do their best at the ordinary things they do, and who bring good into the lives of others." He went on to say that my mother was a saint- he knew her well.

I'm so proud to have had a saint for my mother.

This morning I'll visit the church where she always insisted on visiting when she came to Dublin shopping. Often, I saw this as a waste of good shopping time, but I see it differently now. I'll light a few candles, and say a little prayer for her. Not that she needs it, she's a saint after all.

  1. And one from me. My mom has been gone for 26 years now and I know she would have echoed the sentiments in that poem had she heard it. Moms can be very special. Does it ever occur to you that we are moms, too?

  2. A lovely and moving tribute. My Mom's been gone 16 years, where does the time go?

  3. Our moms never leave us. May they be saints (mine wasn´t) or just ordinary moms with flaws (like drinking a bit too much), still they loved us, and they are proud of us. Mine is gone for 15 years, but I often see her face before me, and I feel that we are still giggling together.

  5. Stephanie- I do sometimes think about the fact that I'm a mom too, and sometimes it shocks me!
Sunny- we never stop missing them, do we?
Angela- I agree, I still see and hear my Mom. She was very near me recently, when I needed her very much, and I heard and heeded her advice.
Maggie May, we do miss them, I'm sure you'd love your Mum to be with you at this time.

    Thanks for all your comments.

I love her choice of poems and what a wise priest.
